September 2, 2012 Saddle Mountain Distance: 5 mi, RT + ½ mile spur trail

Don't let this trail deceive you...this is at the beginning!
We had a family gathering we wanted to attend so we opted for a short hike close to home this weekend. We'd done Saddle Mountain once before but it had been a long time and so we decided to give it a try once again.
Only 2 1/2 miles one way, it should be a pretty quick jaunt. The parking lot was packed so we knew it would be a busy trail.

This is at about mile 1 1/2

A lot of improvements had been made since we'd last been here. The cyclone fence trail for example. It really helped with the climb but we were a bit nervous that our shoes would catch on the way down. They didn't but we were cautious anyway.

Looking back at where we'd been made us understand why we were huffing and puffing! The trail still has some winding to do up the rest of the mountain.
Nearing the end...but not the end...

Looking back from the top. There is a lot you can't see in between...

We made a nice long video from the top but none of the mountains showed up in it so we opted for photos instead.

View of Warrenton and Astoria and the Columbia River from the top.

Two of the mountains visible

Once we came down and were nearly finished we saw the spur trail. Still having energy to spare, we decided to take the 1/4 mile trail.  It was obviously not heavily traveled, slightly steep and a little rock climb at the end but fun. We weren't disappointed.

Looking back from the spur lookout. If you look closely, you can see little itty bitty people just below the tree on the top. Yup. That's the trail.

Again, look near the top and you can see little white specks. Those are hikers.
As usual, it was a great day hiking. It took us about 2 hours including lunch at the top so we felt pretty good about it. Much faster and pleasant than the last time!

Happy Hiking!
