January 20, 2013 Elk Mt. again

I know I said I'd never come DOWN Elk Mt again after our last experience but we did and you know what?  It wasn't that bad.
We knew we were itching to get out and we didn't have a lot of daylight so we agreed to go up & down the mountain. It has been pretty cold lately too so we didn't want to risk hiking in the dark and possible snow.

We could not have been more surprised! It was cold at the trail head so we bundled up only to strip down to single layers in the first 1/2 mile. The sun was out and it was nearly 60 degrees. There were a few patches of snow but nothing to worry about. The summit had enough to make finding the adjoining trails very difficult. No one had signed the log for 2 weeks and it looked like it. We sat there in the warm sunshine and looked at the spectacular view of Mt. Hood. It's the first time we've been up there in weather that allowed views. WOW.

So it took us forever (longer than our usual 2 mph pace) to summit and the way down was slow too. The 3 mile hike took us about 5 hours including our food break and photos.  We are firm believers in caution (truth is we don't like pain) so we came down the hill of marbles slowly.

Here are some photos to whet your hiking appetite.  I have a great video of Jeff but I'm not sure I can load it with the "smart" phone!

We love hiking and appreciate all of your friendship and support!

Mt. Hood. Isn't it beautiful?
This says it all don't ya think?

  1. Oh, what a gorgeous day! I didn't know you could see Mt. Hood from there. The Bald guy is indeed in heaven! Nothing better.

  2. Definately says it all! My thoughts on your last post is that the only thing you won't be able to forgive yourself for is not trying.
