Getting started and tackling Mt. Hebo

I'm finally getting started on our blog so
I will begin with some old stuff and eventually get up-to-date. It's hard to post the old stuff when we are constantly going out for more! Our first hike of the season was Mt. Hebo. At just over 3,000 feet, it still has snow in April. We suspect we were the first over the top this year as there were no footprints and the snow was pretty deep.

The trail is only 8 miles from Hebo Lake to South Lake and we think about 5 of the 8 were deep snow. The plan was to hike over to South Lake, spend the night and come back the next day. That part went according to plan... We've heard other hikers say that wearing trail runners instead of heavy hiking boots was the way to go as they are more comfortable, lighter and dry quickly. So, we tried it. They are right. Our feet got wet but not cold and even after sitting out overnight, they weren't too bad in the morning.

Other than the snow the hike was uneventful. I slipped in the snow and twisted my ankle but it could have been so much worse and we are grateful for that. We came home super excited about the entire adventure and ready to do it again. Next time we might have snow shoes though!

Doesn't look so bad? Don't let it deceive you! We hit the first snow within the mile!
The fog made it sort of surreal
Deep snow.
A panorama of the valley from the top...wow...

Much love to all,
Jeff 'n Sue
